The contribution of each of the above levers to the overall emissions target is not elaborated in detail by Sasol 1, but it would appear that the replacement of coal gasifiers with steam reformers to process natural gas instead of coal in the early stages of the transition will be a substantial contributor, with smaller gains made by substituting power demand with renewable power and through process efficiencies. Ultimately, successfully utilising green hydrogen (purchased or produced on site via electrolysis) and sustainable carbon for a green product slate, as illustrated in the adjacent figure, is the only potential use of Secunda and Sasolburg in a net zero economy, unless technological innovation provides additional zero carbon options.
