Transitioning SA's Petrochemical Value Chain
Downstream
This section presents an overview of chemicals and liquid fuels demand, markets, and decarbonisation opportunities linked to the Secunda and Sasolburg facilities.
Sasol is a critical supplier to both these markets. In FY2019 it produced 11.2 million barrels (bbl) of diesel and 20.8 million bbl of petrol at Secunda, with further production of 11.9 million bbl of diesel and 7.9 million bbl of petrol from crude oil at Natref (in which Sasol holds a 64% share).
In that same year, Sasol sold 3 946 kt of chemicals from Secunda and Sasolburg (its Chemicals Africa division), which is dominated in both tonnage and value by sales of base chemicals and performance solutions. In terms of revenue for Sasol, diesel and petrol represented R 67 million and chemicals R 55 million in FY2019.
Liquid fuels and chemicals are considered separately, along with key demand side decarbonisation interventions that could impact these markets.
