Introduction
A 2022 Meridian Economics Briefing Note reflected on whether appropriate analytical resources were available to support just transition decision making in South Africa. In the note, Meridian argued that policy and decision makers needed additional resources to those offered by modelled decarbonisation pathways to 2050, as well as additional types of knowledge and ways of integrating these. This site is the output of a subsequent exploration of what such integrated resources might look like, using Sasol South Africa’s large emitting assets of Secunda and Sasolburg and their petrochemicals value chains as a case study. A national interest perspective is taken in the exploration: What are the optimal transition pathways of Secunda and Sasolburg for South Africa as a country?
