Transitioning SA's Petrochemical Value Chain
Health
The process of creating liquid fuels and chemicals from coal and gas is an inherently polluting one, impacting the environment of Sasolburg and Secunda, and thereby the health of the residents of these towns and beyond (Grassroots Engagement). Both facilities are in areas that have been designated as Priorities in terms of air pollution, with the quality of air in the Mpumalanga Highveld Priority Area (which includes Secunda, 12 Eskom coal-fired power stations and the Natref refinery) contravening people’s constitutional right to an environment that is not harmful to people’s health and wellbeing. Poor air quality in the area leads to disease and premature death of hundreds of people per year.
Generally, there is mistrust between large industrial emitters and local populations who suffer from ill-health caused by local air and water emissions (Grassroots engagement).
