Value-adds

The main value-adds of the project are as follows:

  1. Approach – The project provides a structured way for decision-makers to engage with the decarbonisation challenge that is inclusive of multiple knowledge dimensions and perspectives.
  2. Content – To understand Secunda, Sasolburg and their value chains, the project takes as departure point existing techno-economic decarbonisation models, which are suggested to be critical in understanding the ambition required across the economy, including the petrochemicals value chain, and the high-level implications of achieving this ambition. A summary of the findings of this modelling as it pertains to individual value chain elements is provided throughout. It then provides an additional layer of content detail on the challenges and opportunities, using the detailed, multi-dimensional analysis approach that underpins the project. A third value add is the techno-economic deep dive component of the project, which provides a clear, structured description of the Secunda and Sasolburg facilities, one that is not readily available in the literature. This deep dive is aimed at an interested, non-technical lay person, to provide them with insights on not only current activities, but the implications of decarbonisation.
  3. Communication – The non-linear, interactive presentation format used is aimed at providing an accessible and engaging experience for the reader, hopefully enhancing communication of complex specialist territory, and providing new ideas on how studies in this area might be communicated in future. The resulting content structure is depicted below:
